Another day, another $1.37 (before taxes of course)

Back in the office today. I was out last Thurs and Fri for a few appointments and just some me time away from my monitor. It was nice to not have to worry about work for a bit. Thankfully I wasn't on call and didn't have to make arrangements for that.

It's been very rainy here lately. Normally that would suck but it's been very very dry here so the rain was badly needed. Haven't been able to play much golf lately but have started reading more.

Right now I am reading the Dr. Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell as well as the series of Dr. Alexandra Blake by Lori Andrews. I am very fascinated by medical examiners. The Dr. Blake series is more about an epidemiologist than a ME but it's very good so far. The series is only about 3 books long and I am on book 2. The Dr. Scarpetta series is 25 books long so I will be reading that for a few months. Which is okay with me because I'm through book 3 and it is awesome so far!

When I was younger I wanted to become a pathologist but was basically talked out of it from the beginning. Since I had no one to counter the negative talk I let it happen. I was never told about what options I had or what I needed to do to become one. I would have loved the chance to volunteer in an ME's office to learn about the job. I'm also starting to watch the TV series Crossing Jordan. It's been airing for a while and the channel it is on finally looped through it and restarted from S1 E1. I really like it.

I'm sort of going through a phase now of "What if..." thinking. Like "what if I had gone the route of becoming a pathologist, how would my life be different now?" It's a little depressing but I can't complain too much. I have a good job. I've travelled the world. I have an amazing wife who is a much better upgrade from my previous wife. My military retirement gives me guaranteed money every month and very affordable health care until I die. We live in a nice little cottage house on a big lake. It's not lakefront but we can see the water from our deck. If we could trim a few trees down we'd have a much better view but those trees belong to the people living below us and they are bat crap crazy.

I'd love to write something. A book. A screenplay. I've always wanted to be a published writer but I have absolutely no idea how to put together a decent story. My favorite genre is thriller (crime, medical, financial, legal are my most favorite). I love just about anything in the Star Wars universe and I really love thrillers where the main character has to solve riddles/puzzles to save something/someone (like the Robert Langdon character in Dan Brown's novels).

My favorite authors are John Grisham and Dan Brown. Patricia Cornwell and Lori Andrews are rapidly finding a place on my list of favorites.

Work has been okay. Lot of little tasks. Nothing major since the phishing campaign attack we had a few weeks ago. Took us about 3 days to fully settle that down. We had a few compromised accounts but thankfully nothing major. As a higher education organization we really don't have much valuable data to steal. We do, however, have many thousands of user accounts which would be very useful as part of a botnet used to attack something/someone else.

Other than that all is well. Golf season ends soon. We play one more big event next Fri and then I am putting my clubs up for the season. I'm at the point where my body is taking longer to recover so I think I just need to relax for the offseason and mentally prepare for next season.

Which is fine. Gives me a lot more time to read.

Until next time...
